  8. Schleswig (Danish Slesvig) and Holstein were
  9. two duchies held by the kings of Denmark from
  10. 1460, but were not part of the kingdom; a
  11. number of the inhabitants were German, and
  12. Holstein was a member of the Confederation of
  13. the Rhine formed 1815. Possession of the
  14. duchies had long been disputed by Prussia,
  15. and when Frederick VII of Denmark died
  16. without an heir 1863, Prussia, supported by
  17. Austria, fought and defeated the Danes 1864,
  18. and in 1866 annexed the two duchies. A
  19. plebiscite held 1920 gave the northern part
  20. of Schleswig to Denmark, which made it the
  21. province of Haderslev and Aabenraa; the rest,
  22. with Holstein, remained part of Germany.
